The law sometimes does the right thing

A couple recent decisions go the right way:

  • Government admits that telling the truth cannot cause harm
  • Doctors can discuss things which might help their patients, even if the federal government doesn’t approve

This is exactly why I’ve been donating this year

This article pretty much sums up why I think this election cycle will be different from previous ones. The power of the internet which Dean is utilizing is not merely that it provides a new medium for distribution of the same old politico-bullshit and “why I’m a war hero” blurbs; rather it allows for a path to overcome the inertia hurdle that stops the middle class from making that $200-300 per year in donations. You read something online about Dean that makes you think “Ok, this year I think I will give the money”, and boom, a click later you’re entering credit card info. See, decide, act. No having to wait to get home to look a number up in the phone book, or search for stamps to mail the check in. See, decide, act.

Speaking of which:

SPF records

I’ve decided that I like SPF enough to publish DNS records for my domains. They’re set up as softdeny for now to be safe. One problem I forsee if this gets widely adopted is that my MUA won’t currently switch sending SMTP servers based on the From: line of the email I’m sending — so if I’m sending as my work persona from home, my MUA’s going to try sending through my home server — if work’s published SPF records for its domains, that mail is going to not end up in the right place. I suppose I might be able to configure my own SMTP server to relay through the work domain or something, or use something like anubis to do the redirection for me based on the from line.

Odd listening combinations

Not sure exactly what’s going on at the Apple Music Store:

But then if you click the Walter Cronkite link, you get to a page where it says they don’t actually have any Walter Cronkite recordings for sale…. So is this a database bug, or an easter egg?
Update: So if you *search* for Cronkite, you do actually get 1 album listed: “I can hear it now the sixties”. Plus a few albums which are Walter plus others. But the link from the Public Enemy page isn’t live for some reason — it just takes you to an empty page. And even if there is a Cronkite recording for sale, it does not explain in any way how it could be linked to Public Enemy by purchases, especially since there doesn’t seem to be enough data on the Cronkite recordings to be able to link him back to anyone else… I suspect it must be either DB corruption or an easter egg.
Update 2: The Baconizer to the rescue (sort of). As expected, it’s a pretty long path. The connection no longer seems to exist on the Apple Music Store any more though, so it looks like whatever the issue was, it’s gone now.
