When the gumstix gets a TCP/IP signal to wake, the main system comes back up within 3 seconds, and the gumstix hands back over to it. Gumstix and main machine share a MAC for seamless transition such that the network can't easily tell that the main system wasn't just awake the whole time. Paper is using a laptop as the main system, and reduces "idle" power from 11W to ~300mW, while basically keeping a complete wifi/ip/tcp stack in place the whole time.
